If memory serves me right, this inspiration is a beautiful old Telemark trunk in the Folk Art Museum of Bygdøy (by Oslo, Norway). Dr. Gisland Ritz has a photo of this trunk, full page in one of her wonderful books. Anyway, I've always admired the strokework and limited palette.
