There is a beautiful history of decorating the long narrow boats that transported goods on the canal system in England. A story is told about the time that the working people refused to work on the boats that were not decorated with the traditional roses and castles, this was because the decorative painting had become “so expensive.” Every artist had their own style of developing the theme (roses and castles), the advertising, and the simple but decorative color schemes. Simplicity of stroke style was necessary because the decoration was viewed from a long distance.
