The fruit stencil was done on a tin tray. Fruit and leaf stencils were especially popular across the back of chairs. We also chose to illustrate some tortoise shell technique on this piece because we could photograph the example for you at a closer range. Tortoise shell can be used in many ways, as a faux finish, just by itself, or in combination with other types of decorations. When it is used as a background behind painting it should be more mute so as to not detract from the painting.
