There is a rich history of painting boxes and toys in the mountain areas of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Northern France. Of special note are the brides’ boxes. Usually given to the intended bride as a love gift, these boxes would hold everything from small pins and jewelry to her special dress. The boxes came in many sizes and other items such as small trunks could be decorated with bits and pieces of the larger designs.
